Saturday Leslie and I attacked the pile of logs we had moved to the area where we cut and split the logs and stack them to dry for firewood. I used chainsaw to cut the logs down to 12-18 inches in length and Leslie moved the logs to where I was cutting so I could concentrate on the chainsaw and then she stacked the cut logs in a pile for later. Some of the smaller diameter logs she stacked in the pallets we have set up for drying the split logs. These are mostly red maple from our crop tree release activity of last fall.
Today I spent the morning splitting the logs we cut on Saturday. I made a dent in the pile of logs and the pallets of firewood are filling up nicely. It will take two more splitting sessions to finish up the pile and then we start again.... It's going to be a
warm winter at our house. Red (soft) maple is easy to burn, easy to split, doesn't give sparks or heavy smoke, but is only a medium producer of heat at 19.1 BTUs/cord.
