The class was held at the PA Livestock Evaluation Center and our lathes were arranged around the perimeter of the room, with David Ellsworth's lathe positioned at one end of the room. Dave stated with a bowl blank and showed how to balance the blank between centers. Once he had rough turned the blank he also showed how to reposition the lathe to take advantage of the exposed grain pattern to improve the artistic design of the bowl. Then he began to shape the outside of the bowl.
At that point we all went to our lathes and duplicated the bowl set up and initial bowl shape. We then broke for lunch. Dave then demonstrated the cuts to hollow out the bowl. The shape of his gouge makes this a simpler process because the gouge has a large bevel that wraps around the sides of
the chisel tip, so you can have more bevel contact while turning the inside slope of the bowl. Dave then showed how to set up cuts at the base of the bowl to form a foot for the bowl within the tenon. After removing the excess wood around the tenon, he revesrse the bowl into a jam chuck and finished off the foot and parted the remainder of the tenon. We went back to our bowls and repeated his process and techniques to complete our bowls.
Dave does not finish the interior of his bowls because he follows the practice of ceramic artists in that the insides of a ceramic bowl is never finished because it contains the fingerprints of the artist. Dave's bowls contain his tool marks. He also does not put any finish material on the inside of the bowl, because that would hinder the natural drying process.
He does put an oil finish on the outside of his bowls, but no longer uses wax because wax attracts dust and can promote the formation of mold. My bowl has a rather small foot and while the outside shape is a continuous curve from lip to foot, inside the sides of the bowls slope down to the bottom of the bowl where there is a flat spot about the size of a 50 cent piece. Putting a finishing cut on that flat spot was difficult with Dave's gouge because of the angle of the bevel. He then demonstrated how to use a gouge with a 75-85 degree angle to clean out the bottom of a flat bowl. The thickness of the bowl is slightly smaller than .25 inch and that thickness is relatively consistent all the way down the sides and to the bowl bottom.
You can see my tool marks on the inside and outside of the bowl, so I need some more work on applying the gouge to make a finishing cut.
This was a great turning experience, making a bowl under the watchful eyes of David Ellsworth.
