Red Pine bowls on a rainy day

I cut a few log sections from an old Red Pine tree that had been cut down during our Aspen regeneration cut early this spring.
After cutting one of the logs down the middle to eliminate the pith, I carried one log and the split log to the basement.  I sealed the ends of the whole log and one half of the split log and then I mounted a faceplate on the flat sawn side of the other half of the split log.

Once I had shaped the outside of the bowl, I cut a tenon on the bottom and reverse chucked it to hollow out the inside of the bowl.  I used a Jacobs chuck and a Forstner drill bit to cut a 2 inch hole down the center of the bowl.  This was the first time I have used the Jacobs chuck.  It makes it easier to hollow out the wood in the center of the bowl and the depth of the drilled hole also helps to estimate the depth of the bowl.

Once I got the insides hollowed out, I used a jam chuck to reverse the bowl and part off the tenon.  Sanded and applied a coat of mineral oil and then put the new bowl in a bag full of shavings to slow down the drying of the bowl to avoid cracking.

 They really smell like a pine forest.
